Welcome to Women in the Shade - Join Us in Making a Difference

At Women in the Shade, our vision is unwavering: to foster an environment where the talents, lived experiences, and unique perspectives of Black women are not only acknowledged but celebrated and valued. We reject the status quo that allows systemic barriers and obstacles to persist, hindering the progress and professional journeys of Black women in uniformed services.

Together, we can create a future where Black women in uniform services are celebrated, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential. Join us in our mission to drive meaningful change and foster a culture of inclusivity within uniformed services.

About us

Our Vision

'Creating an environment where Black women’s talents, unique experiences, and perspectives are acknowledged, respected and valued”

Our Mission

  • Provide inclusive leadership which drives change for Black women in uniformed services
  • Making meaningful and sustainable progress in eliminating discrimination
  • Empowering and supporting Black women

Key Questions

1. Why is there such a disparity of Black women in senior leadership roles compared to their white counterparts by reviewing and analysing data?

2. How does this impact Black women and how can they be supported to survive and thrive in this workplace culture?

3. Does addressing racism and sexism include the experiences of Black women?

4. What are the implications and impact of a lack of Black women diversity for organisations such as the police?

OUR WHY

A data review from LeanIn.Org and McKinsey & Company’s 2021 Women in the Workplace study reveals concerning disparities faced by Black women:

  • More likely to cope with the impact of racism and racial trauma
  • Face disproportionately high barriers in the workplace
  • Heavily impacted by bias in hiring, promotion, and retention
  • Experience more micro-aggressions than other groups of women

The underrepresentation of Black women in critical organisations like the police is a pressing issue that demands attention. At Women in the Shade, our vision is clear: to create an environment where Black women's talents, unique experiences, and perspectives are not only acknowledged but also respected and valued.

Our mission is to provide inclusive leadership that catalyses change within uniformed services, ensuring full inclusivity by:

  • Making meaningful and sustainable progress in eliminating discrimination based on ethnicity and gender
  • Empowering and supporting Black women to thrive in their roles

Together, let's work towards a future where every Black woman in uniformed services feels empowered, respected, and valued for her contributions.
